Re: War

In another topic, Mars_B4_Moon just posted a link to an article by Robert Zubrin....

Because the article concludes with an argument about war, I thought it might fit into this topic by RobertDyck...

But of course, it would be better to unite our world without war. To do so, we must ask ourselves why we need war. Tyrants claim that war will always be inevitable, since we live on a small world and there is only so much of it to go around. As Adolf Hitler put it in 1941, “The laws of existence require uninterrupted killing so that the better may live.” Limited resources imply eternal war, which justifies tyranny.

In fact, Earth’s resources are infinite. That is because there are no such things as “natural resources.” There are only naturally occurring raw materials, which are transformed into resources through human creativity and ingenuity in the form of inventions. Furthermore, inventions are cumulative: since all inventions are combinations of previous inventions, the more inventions there are, the more there can be. This is why, even though the human race has grown eightfold since Thomas Malthus wrote his erroneous thesis on the dangers of overpopulation two centuries ago, the resources available per person today are vastly greater than in his time.

But the idea that Earth’s resources are infinite is counterintuitive. Making people understand that can be like trying to convince a mathematically illiterate person that a 1-centimeter line contains an infinite number of points. It just doesn’t seem possible. But even the most elementary student of mathematics can readily accept the idea that there are an infinite number of points in a line that extends an infinite distance in both directions.

This is the true value of space. It is not a question of obtaining raw materials. We will probably not get oil from Mars. We will get inventions that will benefit humanity greatly. For just as the joyously innovative frontier society that was early America showered the world with inventions from the steamboat and the telegraph to the lightbulb, centrally-generated electric power, recorded sound, motion pictures, airplanes, and much more, so explorers and settlers on Mars will be forced to innovate dramatically in many vital areas, including biotech (to deal with the critical shortage of arable land), robotics and artificial intelligence (to overcome the severe labor shortage), and advanced forms of nuclear power (to provide for the needs of an energy-intensive society completely lacking fossil fuels.)

But these benefits, as great as they are, pale in comparison to the greatest blessing we will receive from Mars, which is the knowledge that there is no need to kill each other in provincial fights over territory on Earth when we can create new worlds for everyone.

To prevent war, the Weinersmiths would lock humanity in a cage. But that is the way to insure war. For the Weinersmiths, our freedom to explore space is the problem. But exactly the opposite is true. Freedom is not the problem. Freedom is the solution.

On to Mars.

Re: War

Peter Zeihan thinks Elon Musk is a white supremacist because he's tired of feeding company resources into the process of Ukrainians and Russians mass murdering each other?

Lol.

Musk is saying that Zelensky is starting to act like another Putin thug, that the world doesn't need any more of those people than we already have, and he doesn't want to spend company money to perpetuate that thuggery any longer.  Zeihan can throw as many temper tantrums as he wants to, but that doesn't or at least shouldn't make anyone else beholden to his irrational toddler-like demands.  Charity for your pet cause is not owed to you by anyone.  Leftists don't seem to get that.

How ‘Titanic’ encouraged defections from North Korea
https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/how-titani … rth-korea/

Titanic shattered box office records in countless countries all over the world, but it ended up having an even more profound effect on a nation where even watching it was illegal. In 2007, Park Yeon-mi and her family fled North Korea in an effort to escape the oppressive regime, with her love of Cameron’s film playing a huge part in the risky decision.

Having witnessed the mother of a school classmate be executed for loaning a South Korean feature to a friend, the punishment associated with external cinema was capital. Undeterred, though, Park viewed mainstream movies as “a window for us to see the outside world.”

“There were different levels of punishment,” she explained to The Guardian. “If you were caught with a Bollywood or Russian movie you were sent to prison for three years, but if it was South Korean or American you were executed.” Despite the inherent dangers, Park and her friends developed a deep-seated love of popular titles.

“My favourite movies were Titanic, James Bond and Pretty Woman – people smuggled in pirate copies from China,” she continued. “Everyone was hungry so they couldn’t afford to buy many DVDs, so if I had Snow White and my friend had James Bond we would swap.”

The prospect of death looming overhead for doing something as innocuous as viewing a film is a spine-chilling prospect, but Park “couldn’t stop watching movies because there was no fun in North Korea.” Due to the mundane nature of her everyday life, “when I watched them, I saw something new and felt hope – fear didn’t stop me, nor will it stop others.”

The black market in North Korea for Western cinema has been booming for years against the express wishes of the authorities, but Titanic proved so powerful for Park that it served as the catalyst for her family to flee their home country for good

Re: War

Mars_B4_Moon,

A lot of people with no frame of reference cannot imagine how a dictator who has no functional restraints on the use of his power might treat his own people.  That doesn't mean Yeon-mi Park is lying, it just means the people who listened to what she described have no frame of reference for what she is talking about.  Executing someone for watching a movie is wildly outside the western psyche.  It seems completely alien to us.  That's how different a communist country like North Korea is, when compared to say, America or England.

This is also how and why they come up with nonsensical explanations for what is so obviously true.  An angry evil man wasn't responsible for murdering all those people using a gun, it was that no good rotten gun he was carrying.  That is what a child's mind does to protect itself from the infinitely more horrifying idea that there are random people out there in society who are so consumed by their emotions that they'll randomly kill people if the opportunity presents itself.  In the conservative mindset, rather than collectively punishing the rest of society for the evil deeds of the few, we separate those few immoral / irrational / evil people from the rest of society so that they can no longer visit their madness on everyone else abiding by the rules of civilized society.  The radical leftists find this intolerable, because they know their ideology is depraved and evil.  They would visit their depravity on others, if only the right opportunity was present for them to exploit.  Having their darkest fervent desires structurally thwarted by the mechanisms of law and order is anathema to what they want, which is to destroy society and replace it with their own version of dystopia, which they've convinced themselves is utopia.

Recently on "The View", Whoopi Goldberg opined that President Biden has the power to "round up and jail all Republicans".  "As the President, he has that power right now.  I don't understand why he's not using it."  Even if I think she's as nutty as the rest of the Democrats have become these days, I would be a complete fool to believe she's not sincere in her views.  Whether I like it or not, that's her "view" of the world- that the purpose of political power is to round up and imprison anyone who doesn't share your own politics.  It's not to serve your nation and its people- all of them, even the ones you disagree with, it's to punish your political enemies for daring to hold different opinions than your own.

That is why I opined that we are living through another age of unreason.  We're regressing back to the dark ages, because our progressives are making great progress in transforming nations around the world into religious fundamentalist indoctrination centers which support one flavor of the progressive religion or another.  They are merely the next group of unreasonable people trying to use force to assert domination over people who simply disagree with them and want no part of their madness.  This new age of unreason from the political left (marxists, socialists, national socialists, communists), is authoritarian in nature, as it always has been, and always will be.  This pointless endeavor is doomed to miserable failure, but between the lot of them they lack sufficient intelligence to understand why their latest bid for domination will also fail like all the rest before it.  Nobody who is not deeply delusional or malevolent thinks society should be or can be run that way.

So long as there are about 10 good people out there in any given society who are willing to speak the truth, regardless of personal consequences, the ideas and egos of these "radical immoralists" are so fragile that failure is the only possible outcome.  They know they're evil, we know they're evil, and they know that we know they're evil.  We've seen the end results of around a dozen different experiments with radical immorality / communism now, but our leftists are still pursuing it.  That can only mean they want collective punishment and other forms of depravity, and that they're incapable of learning from the mistakes of the past.  They claim to be creative, but they're out of ideas and arguments for their ideology.  There's no introspection or evaluation of results going on in their heads, and their justifications are not credible to reasonable people.  That happens to describe most people, even if reasonability means very different things to different people.

I'm more worried at this point about what they'll do to themselves than I am about what they can inflict on anyone else.  Watching their entire worldview collapse in real time has affected them in very unhealthy ways.  Actions driven by blind anger and hatred are the only thing they have left, because they've well and truly lost the argument.  Everyone who is not captured by their cult knows that there's something deeply wrong with them.  Nothing worthwhile will ever come from teaching people to hate themselves or others.

I expect that the remainder of this century to be spent removing their poisonous influence over civilized society.  In time, the cycle will repeat itself, just as it has so many times before.
