Re: Privatly funded Pluto mission?

First I've heard of this. Anyone know what he is saying?

As a pledge to his commitment, Rutan plans to take off a small piece of SpaceShipOne before it is sent off to become a museum display. Part of the craft will be packed aboard a spacecraft bound for Pluto, the first deep-space mission planned without government backing.

Sort of the same thing with the voyager plates but only this time with a piece of commercial hardware instead. Just a welcome mat if ever found.

Re: Privatly funded Pluto mission?

I mean the privately funded part. I can't find anything on a private Pluto mission.

Re: Privatly funded Pluto mission?

Two other sites throw a little light on the matter:

Except for one piece. Rutan plans to pack up to 100g of SpaceShipOne to fly on the New Horizons' mission to Pluto - the first non-governmental launch into deep space.

(http://www.onlypunjab.com/fullstory904- … punjab.com)

One tiny part of SpaceShipOne, though, will be traveling much farther. At the post-flight press conference Monday he said a small sample of the vehicle would be incorporated onto New Horizons, the Pluto flyby mission scheduled for launch in January 2006.

Whether Rutan is the one with the mistaken impression about New Horizons or merely a few reporters is unclear.
