Talk:Life Support Systems

Can't get head nor tails on the last sentence... What does it mean?--Rxke 17 August 2005 07:28 (EDT)
CELSS, not CLLSS
Guys, i think it's CELSS ( 'Controlled (or Closed) Ecological Life Support System' ), not 'Closed Loop Life Support System'... should this be modified in the article ? maxie 23 January 2006 17:34 (EST)
@JohnCreighton Well, I think both acronyms are correct but I would say the meaning is slightly different as CLLSS could consist primarily of mechanically methods while CELLS implies the primary systems are biological. I believe for air recycling the most space efficient and reliable methods are mechanical while for waste recycling biological methods may have the edge if you want to completely close the loop. However, the idea of a completely closed loop is somewhat idealistic as space stations tend to leak so even if the recycling was perfect the space station would still need to be supplied with new air and water.
So in short, good observations. And we should address this point in future revisions.
I've added two articles, Closed Loop Life Support System and Open Loop Life Support Systems, that may be illustrative. I'm currently going with the interpretation that CELSS is a subtype of CLLSS. --C M Edwards 25 January 2006 12:32 (EST)
@I did a Google search and found out the Mailing List of the old mars society CLESS task force is still active.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GreenCELSSTaskFORCE/
It just isn’t as active as it was. I guess for some reason I just stopped receiving messages even though I never asked to stop receiving them. I will post some of the better messages on the new mars forums to stimulate discussion and provide a place for the wiki to link to that does not involve creating a new account. --User:John Creighton 25 January 2006 9:13 (Mountain Time)
@I have some more info. The group is still active at least in part. The Yahoo group is there mainly for archives but a few posts are made each month to keep it active. The founder of the group was Terri Kok. I am not sure what degree of recycling Terri’s system was but in contrast to most biological recycling systems it used very little space.

...interpretation that CELSS is a subtype of CLLSS - indeed, i think this is correct. maxie 26 January 2006 12:36 (EST)
Quote: While Mars is further away from Earth, it contains all the necessary elements in order to survive - Can you quote any serious source saying this ? And how about nitrogen ?! I knew there is very little, not by far enough... maxie 26 January 2006 16:42 (EST)
