The other username Palomar7 she used for a bit but felt it was still to masculine due to a few members that rubbered her the wrong way and did not come back after that.

Re: OldFart1939 Postings and YouTube Video Presentation(s)

I would like to express my deep appreciation that both GW Johnson and tahanson43206 virtually attended Dr. Bell's excellent presentation. The attendance was below normal--probably due to a PBR (Professional Bull Riders) event at the local arena and a gun show in town. Our core group of regulars was there, tho'. The weather was also the first shirt-sleeve warm day this Spring.

Re: OldFart1939 Postings and YouTube Video Presentation(s)

Wyoming is a bit chillier than central Texas.  We've reached 90 F once already,  and are headed there again this week.

It's been over a quarter century,  but my experience in Minnesota said that those folks think it is swimming weather,  once the ice pack breaks up on the lakes.

Re: OldFart1939 Postings and YouTube Video Presentation(s)

Yes,  I know.  I have seen it.

I was there 2nd half of winter 95-96 and for winter 96-97,  which were both 100-year record-setting winters for cold and snow,  even by Minnesota standards.  That was a real education for a Texas flatland boy.

We moved in between Christmas 95 and New Year 96,  during a local heat wave.  It was 17 F.  Then it dropped below 0 and stayed there.  From New Years' Day to mid-March,  there was not one single day when it was not at least 20 below 0 F for the morning low,  and never got above 0 F for the afternoon high.

That stretch finally broke mid-March,  when the wind died and the sun came out.  It felt warm.  We were all running around the snowbanks outside in short sleeves,  myself included.  Because it felt warm.  The actual temperature turned out to be positive 3 F.

The worst day was Feb 2,  1996,  in Mankato,  MN.  It had been -30 F all night with 40-knot winds.  It was -31 F in Mankato that morning,  with an afternoon high of -14 F.  Up in the arrowhead region near the Canadian border,  it was -61 F (not a wind chill).  200 miles further NW at Winnipeg,  it was -84 F,  again not a wind chill.

The next winter was not quite as cold,  but even snowier.  About 10 miles west of me,  the snowpack was 20-30 feet deep all the way to Montana.  I thought my thermometer was broken,  because it said -10 F every morning from November to March.  I found out it was not broken when we moved back to Texas,  and it went to 104 F.  I had 2-to-5 feet of snow in my yard all winter long.  The meltdown was only 2 weeks long,  in mid-April,  which caused massive flooding in multiple states.

http://mars.nasa.gov/msr

Question ... how long to take a sample?

Very slow process ... Tai Chi dance the engineers have to perform to move the samples.

There is a second robotic arm to stow the sample

Question: ... can the rover pickup samples ? No... the rover cannot do that

A new rover is needed to pick up the samples

Question ... what are the black parts of the pictures ... those are landscapes assembled from multiple pictures.

Question about slide 35 ... the black section is the rover itself ... it is expensive to send data.

Question: ... missed the question ... answer "I don't know"

Possibly it was how long will the equipment last ... ? 80 years ?

A greater concern is funding ... NASA's budget has to pay for keeping these missions going.

The equipment may well outlast funding....

Next: Two books .... 2006 ... started writing books

*** continuing after save

Art of the Cosmos... another picture book

Not sure which book this is ... covers the geological history of our planet ...

wrote a book about space in general ...

? book about Voyager .... narrative book

First Saturday in May ... next meeting

Quite an interesting list of topics. Anyway to see it recorded on Zoom or YouTube?

Re: OldFart1939 Postings and YouTube Video Presentation(s)

For RGClark re #31 .... thanks for asking that question!  The session was definitely recorded!

However, there is work that needs to be done to move a Zoom recording to YouTube.

Hopefully RGClark will inquire and report back on the disposition of that recording.

I believe that in the future, all talks which are recorded will be available through the Yellowstone Valley Astronomy Association Facebook page.

For Oldfart1939...

You're cutting things a bit close here!

It would be helpful to have the Zoom address up on the board already.

I'm going to try to encourage SpaceNut to listen in.

He has a very old computer and may not have sound enabled, but we have time for him to set up to hear your talk.

Also, in your announcement, please use Time.is to provide the correct time zones for your NewMars audience.

You can use UTC for our European members, New York for SpaceNut, and Houston time for our Texas members.

Our time zone is Mountain Daylight Time. Same as Denver.
I'll try to get this Zoom address posted in the morning after contacting the IT specialist.

Re: OldFart1939 Postings and YouTube Video Presentation(s)

For all ...

time.is/utc can be set to show the time in cities of interest...

The city of interest in the case of today's presentation by Oldfart1939 is Denver.

To add Denver to your display of cities of interest, enter Denver into the Search window. The time in Denver will be shown.

Then add Denver to your favorite locations list.

The time.is application will save your preferences so the next time you open it the city of Denver will be present.

As a reminder, if anyone is thinking of attending the presentation today, if you are not familiar with Zoom, you can practice using the NewMars Zoom account at the topic for Zoom Collaboration.  When Oldfart1939 provides the link later today, just click on that and the Zoom program will  connect. You do not need a camera or a microphone.  All you need is a computer monitor and a sound system, so you can watch and listen.

There will be a Chat window in case you have a question for Oldfart1939 after the presentation.

For Oldfart1939...

This post arrives on NewMars as the meeting is underway. Shortly you will be introduced as the featured speaker.  While we (in NewMars) cannot experience the moment live, we can anticipate the YouTube video of your presentation.  Best wishes for an ample audience, and for great questions for you to tackle.  Those will live on in the YouTube video, so please encourage your audience to come up with good ones!

In anticipation of the forthcoming video, I'll change the topic title to reflect it.

Thanks again for telling us of this homage you have prepared for Dr. Urey!
