Congratulations. I'm sure you'll do a splendid job.

#2 Re: Unmanned probes » Beagle 2 - What's happening? » 2003-12-27 07:44:29

Mars Express is the major part of the European mission - Beagle was a late add-on.

Just stating facts.... big_smile

and being frightfully British about the whole thing - stiff upper lip and all that, hey what?

#3 Re: Unmanned probes » Beagle 2 - What's happening? » 2003-12-27 02:06:36

After all, Express was always the main mission. Beagle was a small add-on. A nice-to-have.

#4 Re: Unmanned probes » Beagle 2 - What's happening? » 2003-12-26 03:02:03

In which case they are being foolish - a manned mission would be able to control it's entry and descent pretty much. Poor Beagle was at the mercy of the elements and a preprogrammed sequence of events. Sometimes you need to be able to wing it, like Armstrong did.

#5 Re: Unmanned probes » Beagle 2 - What's happening? » 2003-12-25 13:04:12

Fingers crossed and I'll check the BBC tomorrow.

#8 Re: Unmanned probes » Dust storms could spell disaster for probes - several small storms starting » 2003-12-20 02:40:36

Oh, fine, go ahead and mock.

Would NASA be panicing and issuing negative press statements if it was in this situation? No, of course not.

Got to look on the bright side.

#9 Re: Not So Free Chat » Actions to Reduce Global Warming - is Kyoto really necessary? » 2003-12-07 13:53:23

Well, whatever, there are people who want to make the US pay for not cleaning up it's act to the same extent as other countries are.

Demand for 'Kyoto tax' on the US

Countries refusing to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases should face trade sanctions, according to a British independent think-tank.
The United States has not signed the Kyoto agreement on climate change and Russia has indicated it may follow.

The New Economics Foundation wants the EU to tax imports from these countries because they enjoy a competitive disadvantage as energy costs increase.

Signed-up countries are currently meeting in Italy to discuss the treaty.

New Economics Foundation spokesman Andrew Simms told BBC Radio 4's Today programme EU countries would be within their rights to "work out the cost of the free ride America is getting" and raise that amount.

"There are very few signals the United States understands - they do understand economic signals," Mr Simms added.

"There is only a certain amount of time people can go around behaving like teenagers who don't have to care about anybody else," he told Today.

"We are about half a century away from being ecologically and economically bankrupt because of global warming."

Oh, I do hope so.

#10 Re: Not So Free Chat » Actions to Reduce Global Warming - is Kyoto really necessary? » 2003-12-06 23:46:55

They may not be causing it, but given the current rapid trend compared with the ice records of previous temperature changes, they do appear to be having an accelerating effect.

#11 Re: Not So Free Chat » Actions to Reduce Global Warming - is Kyoto really necessary? » 2003-12-06 10:21:03

I take it that you don't care about the increased volumes of fresh water pouring into the North Atlantic and diluting the salinity of the Gulf Stream to the point where it ceases to flow altogether, thus plunging North Europe into a devastating Ice Age.

No, of course you don't, because it won't affect you. Well,  not until the vast quantities of water that then get locked in the ice instead of circulating in the worlds weather systems start to impact on your own cozy way of life. And the failure of the tropical storms, the monsoon that India depends on for it's crops result in famine and mass migration of people in search of somewhere else to live.... and they come knocking on YOUR door. Then you'll wish the whole world had woken up to what is going on a lot earlier, and that EVERY nation had agreed a course of action in everyone's best interest.

#12 Re: Human missions » George Bush Jr planning on kennedy speach - mostly moon,  but as prep for mars » 2003-12-06 10:13:10

I feel that the Powers That Be should be talking of Mars via the Moon. Testing man's ability to live on low gravity planets while still within reach of home in case of emergency.

And I am confident that the technologies developed to solve the problems of living off Earth will have benefits here too. Like non-fossil fuel transport, recycling techniques, etc.

Well. from what we're coming up with here, it's just a ploy...

#14 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » $300M to destroy hubble » 2003-11-26 02:23:43

Well, after the Mir and Skylab catastrophes, you can understand them wanting to make sure nothing much re-enters the atmosphere...

Ma Rose Slut......................

and that's the most appropriate I could come up with...sorry.

#18 Re: Unmanned probes » Nozomi » 2003-11-25 02:30:59

Well if it makes it, it'll be a nice lil' bugger of a surving satellite, and if it crashes, well congrats to the Japense for have started 'terraforming' at a minimal level.
*Hopes if Nozomi does crash and contains bacteria, they'll be photo... whatever its called so the Red Planet can get a lil' O2 in the atmosphere*

You're not serious I hope.

Contaminate the planet before we've had a chance to properly find out if there really is any indigenous life there?

Time running out for Mars mission

#19 Re: Not So Free Chat » Selfish Motives - (...while we're twiddling our thumbs) » 2003-11-15 11:05:02

It has become fashionable to refuse to accept that anyone can do anything without an ulterior motive. Which is an awful shame, and very insulting to the millions of decent folk who give up time and energy to do charitable works simply because they believe that is the right thing to do.

#20 Re: Not So Free Chat » Free Speech ZONE? » 2003-11-15 04:18:57

Free Spirit:

It's very unfortunate that many people fall into the trap of equating communism with the despotic rule of a lawless dictator.  That's not true communism!

- You're right. Communism is a lot worse.

True communism is holding all material goods in common in a community for the benefit of all.

This generally only happens in communities whose primary motivation is not for material goods, but spiritual growth and the well being of others. Convents, monasteries and so on.

The rest of us can't quite get our heads around not actually having sole ownership of some object or other, so it fails.

Mercury would also be a good 'base' for solar observations..

#23 Re: Not So Free Chat » Appropriate Topics: On War and Politics » 2003-11-12 15:41:10

I'm skeptical one guy or one concept was responsible for the ultimate fall of Rome. I suspect it was a combonation of things, from Rome finding it economically impossible to continue expanding, to plagues and invasions on all fronts (piss off enough people and this tends to happen).

I don't think their reliance on slave labour helped much either, or the complacency of much of the upper classes....

Well, not until they get a big black out like New York did.

My contacts there were stunned at the night sky, once they could finally see it.

For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
