If you haven’t visited New Mars for a while, you’ll have noticed that the website has been completely revamped. Besides from the cosmetic changes, links to the perenially active forum and new wiki have been added, along with an under-the-hood change to Wordpress as the weblog engine. These changes make it much easier to add new posts and content to the website, as well as allowing staff writers to submit their posts directly. So, expect a New Mars in 2008!

In less than 24 hours, if all goes well, the Beagle 2 probe will touch down on Mars and then send a callsign four hours later. Mission controllers in the UK are all anticipating the signal, but they acknowledge that the mission’s success will depend much on pure luck. Let’s hope that they get it.

Over the next few days and weeks, we will be keeping a close watch on the status of the British Beagle 2 lander. The latest news is that the probe has successfully separated from the Mars Express spacecraft and is now on its descent to Mars.

A ‘wiki’ is a tool for the collaborative creating and editing of stories, papers, information and knowledge, and one wiki called Wikipedia has managed to create a collaborative encyclopedia with over 50,000 entries! The First Words competition has just launched! First Words has been organized by New Mars and the Mars Society, and in it we’d like to know what you think the first words on Mars will be. There are over $300 in prizes among the five categories you can enter (Most Historic, Most Humorous, Most Original, In Five Words and Out of Context) and it promises to be a lot of fun.
First Words will be lasting for the duration of World Space Week (October 4th-10th).
