In less than 24 hours, if all goes well, the Beagle 2 probe will touch down on Mars and then send a callsign four hours later. Mission controllers in the UK are all anticipating the signal, but they acknowledge that the mission’s success will depend much on pure luck. Let’s hope that they get it.

Over the next few days and weeks, we will be keeping a close watch on the status of the British Beagle 2 lander. The latest news is that the probe has successfully separated from the Mars Express spacecraft and is now on its descent to Mars.
